Laboratory Supervisor

Position Overview:
The main tasks of this position are to take responsibility for the execution and continuous maintenance of the administrative functions, laboratory procedures, personnel and test methods of the laboratory and the continual assurance of food safety and quality in accordance with the companies Food Safety & Quality Management System.

Key Responsibilities:
 General operation and maintenance of sensitive laboratory instrumentation and equipment i.e., ICP-OES, GC-FID, NIR, VELP Solvent Extractor, MVP Icon Biocontrol
 Ensure calibration and verification checks are performed on laboratory instrumentation according to set schedules and SOP’s
 Arrange with external calibration entities for lab instrument maintenance and calibration according to a set schedule
 Verification of test results and product information on Frameworx database
 Handling special COA requests internally as well as from external customers
 Handling of general queries and requests received by the laboratory from internal departments and external customers
 Conducting monthly safety checks in all areas applicable to the laboratory
 Requesting quotations, arranging purchase orders and ensure laboratory consumables and chemicals are ordered accordingly
 Conducting monthly stock take of laboratory items and consumables
 Arrange sample for external analysis as indicated on a set schedule
 Conduct regular hygiene swabs on staff, equipment and surface. Interpret results and compile summarized reports for each prescribed area
 Assist with method validation and quality verification checks
 Trending of test results and quality control data
 Investigate and report questionable test results
 Assist with research projects and test studies
 Involvement with training, re-training, and verification of training of laboratory analysts and learnership students
 Compiling monthly shift schedule for laboratory analysts and students
 Participate in internal assessments and audits
 Ensure that cleanliness and safety standards are maintained (strict adherence to PPE, lab safety, food safety rules and regulations)
 Ensure self-behavior is aligned with company values and expectations
 It is expected from the Laboratory Supervisor to satisfactory carry out all the duties and responsibilities that are associated with this position and any other duties that are given by the Laboratory & Quality Superintendent as deemed necessary
 Take full responsibility and action of the laboratory functions and general tasks relating to food safety and quality assurance in the absences of the Laboratory & Quality Superintendent

Key Competencies:
Education and Skills:
 National Diploma in Analytical Chemistry or other related Science field (BSc Degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry or Food Sciences will be advantageous)
o Excellent communication skills both written and verbal in Afrikaans and/or English
o Advance computer literacy i.e., MS Word; MS Excel
o Good time management skills are essential

 Minimum 3 years’ laboratory experience
 Minimum 2 years’ proven success in a supervisory position
 Knowledge of Food Safety & Quality Management Systems (HACCP; ISO, FSSC)
